When Life Hits You Hard, We Help You Hit Back: What to Do After an Accident
Inspired by the billboard you can’t unsee

Let’s face it: life doesn’t always go according to plan. One minute you’re heading to work or picking up the kids, the next—bam—an accident flips your day upside down.

That’s why our latest billboard doesn’t beat around the bush. Because when life hits you hard (literally or figuratively), it’s not the time to panic—it’s the time to Lawyer Up.

But what exactly should you do after an accident? We’re glad you asked.

Step One: Check Yourself (and Others)

Before anything else, check for injuries. If anyone is seriously hurt, call 911 immediately. Even if it seems minor, don’t brush it off—not all injuries show up right away (think whiplash, concussions, or soft tissue injuries).

Step Two: Document Everything

If it’s safe to do so, take photos of the scene—vehicles, road conditions, any visible injuries. Exchange info with the other driver(s), but skip the small talk. Especially avoid saying things like “I’m sorry,” which could be twisted into an admission of fault.

Step Three: File a Police Report

Even if the other driver wants to “handle it without involving insurance,” don’t skip the official report. It’s one of the most important pieces of evidence you’ll have down the line.

Step Four: Lawyer Up Early

Here’s the part most people delay—and it’s often their biggest mistake. Insurance companies may act friendly at first, but they’re not on your side. Having an experienced personal injury attorney from the start ensures you’re protected and not pressured into accepting less than you deserve.

That’s where we come in.

What We Do (Besides Emoji Billboards)

At Shocklee Paolino, we help people navigate the chaos that comes after an accident. That means:

Taking over the paperwork and phone calls

Helping you get medical treatment, even if you don’t have insurance

Fighting for the full compensation you’re entitled to

And most importantly—being the calm in your storm

Pro Tip: Don’t Wait to Call

You don’t need to know if you have a case before you call us. That’s our job to figure out. If you’ve been injured and something feels off, trust your gut and reach out.

Final Word: You’re Not Alone

Our billboard might make you laugh, but our work is serious. We’ve seen what injury victims go through—and we’re here to make sure you don’t go through it alone, confused, or taken advantage of.

So when happens?
You know what to do.

LAWYER UP.

Medical Bills After Dog Bite Injury: Who Should Pay For It?

Dog bites lead to severe injuries. Even minor incidents may lead to medical bills running into hundreds of thousands. Most victims are under the false impression that they can’t do much to get compensation for their injuries in case of a dog bite.

We can help you obtain compensation for injuries and pain suffered due to dog bites in Florida. Under Florida law, a victim of a dog bite can get compensation for:

Medical bills

Pain and suffering

Lost income

Property damage

Dog Owner’s Liability for Dog Bites Under Florida Law

Florida’s Dog Bite Statute stipulates that a dog owner is liable for any injury caused by his/her dog to another person:

Regardless of the viciousness of the dog or the owners’ knowledge of such viciousness.

If the person was in a public place or at a private place lawfully when the incident occurred.

A person needs to be on property lawfully as stated above; otherwise, the owner may claim that the person was trespassing and may not be liable for the dog bite in such circumstance.

Strict Liability

In Florida, there is no requirement to prove that the dog bite happened due to the negligence of the dog owner. This is known as the strict liability clause. Florida is one of the few strict liability states where there is no need to prove the owner’s negligence to claim compensation for a dog bite.

Comparative Negligence in Cases of Dog Bite

Florida follows what is known as comparative negligence in cases concerning personal injuries and dog bites. This means that the awarded sum will be reduced proportionally if the victim also shared some blame for the injury.

If a dog bite lawsuit in Florida awards a sum of $100,000 to the victim and the jury assigns the victim 30% blame for the injury, then the amount will be reduced by $30,000 or 30% of the total sum awarded. One needs to keep this in mind when filing a dog bite lawsuit against a dog owner in Florida.

Who Pays the Medical Bills for a Dog Bite?

You can get paid for medical bills after a dog bite from a homeowner’s insurance if the owner of the dog has one. The second-best option is to check if your health insurance policy can be of any use in covering medical bills.

Florida Dog Bite Attorney

Due to the complex statutes and laws involved in cases of a dog bite in Florida, it’s always a good idea to hire a seasoned dog bite attorney who has prior experience of such claims.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 4.5 million people in the U.S suffer dog bite injuries every year. Other statistics suggest that 1 out of 775 people seek emergency care for dog bites. A large number of victims are boys between the ages of 5 and 9 because they are a soft target for stray dogs.

Jaws of large dogs can exert more than 450 pounds of pressure per square inch which leads to a crush injury that may include lacerations, avulsion, and puncture wounds.

Dog bites may initially seem to be minor, but in many cases, these small bites are proven fatal, and even in cases of nonfatal dog bites, there is a high risk of infections and diseases because several animal diseases can be transmitted to humans.

Assessing Bites

Healthcare providers including nurses and doctors must thoroughly assess dog bites and they must closely examine the wound for lacerations, punctures, avulsions, and crush injuries. It’s always a good practice to take notice of any damage to tendons, nerves, vasculature, ligaments, and bones.

A large number of victims approach court for compensation, so it’s a good idea to keep all the injuries documented. You must keep a record of all your physical examination findings, including measurements of the wound.

A victim must also keep a record of drug allergies along with past medical conditions such as diabetes, liver disease, and immunosuppression. You will also need to note previous tetanus and rabies vaccinations too.

Treatment

Before medical intervention and treatment, the wound should be thoroughly washed with water and soap. The soap has antiviral properties that can help prevent a rabies infection if the wound is cleaned fast enough and thoroughly enough. In case of infection, the first signs will be available within 24 hours after the bite.

Different antibiotics can be prescribed by a medical professional for varying durations based on the type of wound. If the wound is superficial or there is a low risk of infection, then antibiotics are prescribed for 3 to 7 days, but in cases of a serious wound accompanied by inflammation, antibiotics are prescribed for 10 to more.

Conclusion

Dog bites can prove to be fatal in many cases and a victim must almost always immediately seek medical treatment because even superficial wounds can lead to serious health issues and infections if left untreated.

It’s possible to get compensation for the damage caused by dog bites because a victim can normally claim compensation for the following damages:

Recovery of Hospital and Therapy Bills

Lost Wages and Employment

Home Nursing Care

Past, Present, and Future Pain and Suffering

If your child was attacked by an animal, as parents, you are also considered indirect victims. Call our legal gurus and speak with an experienced, leading Florida dog bite attorney immediately.
