Florida Motorcycle Insurance 101
FLORIDA MOTORCYCLE RIDERS
We have had some questions recently about insurance coverage for motorcycle riders. There is a lot of confusion out there, and rightfully so. Did you know that in Florida a motorcycle is not a “motor vehicle.” It doesn’t have 4-wheels so according to Florida law it is not a motor vehicle and as such insurance does not apply to your motorcycle as it does to your car or truck. Is that a big deal? Well most people in Florida know about PIP insurance and that Florida is a “no-fault state.” I say “know about” because most people know it exists but most people don’t know about the complexity of it and when it does and doesn’t apply. Did you know that because a motorcycle is not a “motor vehicle” it is not covered under Florida’s no-fault law? Did you know that in Florida there is no legal requirement whatsoever to carry insurance for a motorcycle owner and rider? Crazy right? I bet you also didn’t know that the PIP coverage a motorcycle owner may have on his car, will not cover the owner if injured in a motorcycle accident. Why? Well, because the motorcycle has two wheels instead of four.
The laws in the sunshine state are a little crazy. We don’t write them, we have the genius’ in Tallahassee to thank for that. We do however know how they operate and how they pertain to you. If you have questions on motorcycle insurance or need help navigating a claim give us a call.
